Natalia Guerrero was accepted to attend the 2023 Culturally Inclusive Planetary Engagement professional development workshop hosted by the USRA Lunar and Planetary Institute Planetary ReaCH team at the Perez Art Museum in Miami, FL, August 17 – 19, 2023.
Guerrero is a third-year PhD student working with Prof. Sarah Ballard studying the demographics of exoplanets and the architectures of planetary systems. Simultaneously, Guerrero is beginning her MFA in Studio Art in the UF School of Art + Art History. Her work, which she describes as text-based art-science performance, draws on her expertise in astronomy and physics as well as her lived experience as a minoritized and underrepresented artist-astronomer in a dominant academic culture.
The Planetary ReaCH workshop pairs together scientists and educators in “bi-directional conversations around diversity and inclusion in engaging Black and Latinx audiences in planetary science.” Guerrero participated in co-creating and leading a hands-on event at the Perez Museum featuring activities for children and teens, implementing practices discussed in the workshop.
