On Saturday, October 14, viewers at the Cuscowilla Nature Preserve were treated to a rare sight, a a partial solar eclipse, where the Moon blocked up to about half of the Sun’s light as seen from north Florida. This event, led by UF astronomy major, Savannah Still, in collaboration with Dr. Triana Almeyda and the University of Florida’s Department of Astronomy, was a huge success, drawing about 300 members of the University of Florida and the public. In addition to safely viewing the Sun, attendees could interact with activities hosted by student-led groups, view a planetarium show, and stop by a couple food trucks for a bite to eat. The event also featured observing Saturn and other celestial objects later that night after attending talk by Dr. Paul Sell. Keep an eye out for other astronomy themed events through the year, including our weekly public nights to resume soon.
